Tornado is a new mid-sized bilberry variety with berries weighing about 0.9–1 gram and an oval shape. It blooms early (from April 24 to May 9), and ripening begins in mid-June (June 8–14). The bushes are medium-sized, medium-density, with a round, bushy appearance, reaching a height of about 90 cm and a width of 60 cm. Leaves are dark green, egg-shaped, slightly hairy, and shoots are curved with pinkish hues. Berries have a dark blue solid color, thin skin, and tender purplish pulp with a sweet-sour taste and characteristic aroma.
The variety is distinguished by high drought resistance, heat tolerance, and winter hardiness. It is not susceptible to diseases and pests under conditions of Samara and other regions of Russia. Yield is average: according to the manufacturer's statement – 104 c/ha or about 3.1 kg per bush. Berries are easy to collect due to low drop-off.
Tornado is excellently suited for growing in gardens, forested areas, and for creating living fences. The bushes are easy to prune, which makes them convenient for maintaining a neat rounded appearance. Due to its hardiness and low care requirements, the variety is an excellent replacement for traditional bilberries in semi-shaded and sunny locations.
