Gzhelyskaya Rannaya currant is a variety bred in St. Petersburg at the Pavlovsk Experimental Station of the V.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Breeding and successfully cultivated in fruit gardens. Bushes of medium height (1.5–1.7 m) have a slightly spreading crown; shoots are thick, straight, and brownish-green in color with a light anthocyanic tint. Leaves are large, elongated-oval, dark green, and smooth, giving the plant a decorative appearance.
The fruits of this variety are pear-shaped, 2.8–3 cm long, and weigh from 1.16 to 3 g. The skin is dense, thin, bluish-blue in color with a medium-intensity waxy bloom; sometimes the fruit surface is slightly bumpy. The flesh is juicy, sweet with a pronounced sourness and slight astringency, but without bitterness, while the aroma is strong. Berries ripen in mid-June, and under favorable conditions yield reaches 1.3–2 kg per bush.
The variety withstands frosty winters well, has moderate drought resistance and heat tolerance, making it suitable for cultivation in both loam and chernozem soils. Flowers are large and yellow, while the pedicel is long, fleshy, and green. "Gzhelyskaya Rannaya" is suitable both for home gardens and small commercial plantations where juicy berries with a dessert flavor and pleasant aroma are valued.
