Epimedium (Epimedium) – a perennial herbaceous plant from the Barberry family, widely known for its decorative and useful properties. It is a medium-sized shrub, usually reaching a height of about two meters, with a compact, upright form and dense dark green foliage. The leaves are small and slightly serrated, while the stems can have a brownish-red hue. The plant prefers partial shade and well-drained soil, requiring moderate watering, mulching, and periodic fertilization.
Epimedium fruits are small berries of medium size (about 0.8–0.9 g), with a vase-shaped or elongated-oval form. The berry skin is tough, dark blue with a waxy bloom, and the flesh is dense and fleshy. The taste is sour-sweet, sometimes accompanied by a slight bitterness; vitamin C content reaches 73 mg per 100 g of product. Berries are usually harvested during the mid-ripening stage when they are fully colored violet-blue.
Epimedium is valued as both a decorative plant and an edible product of folk medicine. Thanks to its high winter hardiness and lack of falling-off film, it is easily grown in various climatic conditions, including the Russian Far East region. Yields can reach 2 kg per bush, making it an attractive choice for gardeners and berry producers.
