Stable Romaine yields: working with the Yara hybrid

When it comes to growing Romaine lettuce, yield stability is the top priority. The 'Yara' hybrid from the Dutch breeding company Enza Limited is a perfect example of predictability meeting expectations. Over several seasons of intensive farming, this lettuce has proven to be a reliable tool that performs well even under fluctuating temperatures.

Field performance advantages

This allows for faster clearing of the area for the next crop, which is critical during a short growing season. The rosette forms uniformly, and the head size is average, making it ideal for mechanical harvesting and subsequent packaging. You won't struggle with inconsistent sizing, which significantly simplifies logistics and sorting processes.

Resistance and protection

The most frustrating part of lettuce farming is disease-related losses. 'Yara' eliminates much of that headache thanks to its genetic resistance to downy mildew and lettuce aphid. Fewer treatments mean a cleaner product and lower production costs. It is worth noting that the hybrid demonstrates resistance to downy mildew (including strains affecting corn and sorghum, which is relevant for crop rotation farms), ensuring the field remains healthy with minimal commercial mass loss.

Agronomic management

From an agronomist's perspective, 'Yara' requires standard Romaine care regarding irrigation and nutrition, but without being 'fussy.' The hybrid holds its leaves well and is not prone to tipburn when basic irrigation schedules are followed. Under intense light, it gains mass quickly without bolting prematurely. This makes it an ideal choice for those who prioritize rapid turnover and high marketability of the produce.
