Salat "Svetlana" is a mid-season variety of asparagus lettuce with a vegetation period of 110-120 days. The plant forms a horizontal rosette 65-95 cm high, consisting of 50-70 light green long leaves. The mass of leaves from one plant reaches about 600 g, while the edible mass of the stem is approximately 200 g. The total yield of the variety is 4-5 kg per square meter, making it highly productive and economically viable for cultivation.
This variety is distinguished by high cold resistance and disease resistance, which allows it to be grown in various climatic conditions and ensures good shelf life of the product. Lettuce leaves "Svetlana" are four times more nutritious than traditional head lettuces, making them especially valuable for healthy eating. In addition to leaves, stems peeled of skin are consumed, which in terms of taste and methods of preparation resemble asparagus and celery.
Stems of lettuce can be fried, stewed, boiled, and also prepared for winter in various ways: salting, pickling, drying, and freezing. To obtain early produce, it is recommended to grow lettuce through seedlings, and for winter storage, sowing is carried out in open ground from late May to late June. Before the onset of frost, plants are dug up with roots, lower leaves are cut off, and placed in storage, which allows to preserve the harvest throughout the winter period.
