Lettuce Prunai

Professional insights on growing Prunai lettuce

When selecting lettuce varieties for greenhouse production, success is defined by consistency and resistance. Working with the 'Prunai' variety by Rijk Zwaan has proven that you don't have to choose between aesthetic appeal and plant health. It is a workhorse for any serious salad producer.

Performance and operational management

The primary advantage of Prunai is its robust genetic resistance profile. In protected cropping, fungal diseases such as fusarium and verticillium wilt are constant threats. This leads to a cleaner crop and lower costs related to chemical interventions.

• Disease Resistance: Exceptional resistance to verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, downy mildew (cladosporium), and tomato mosaic virus.
• Marketable Aesthetics: The intense red color of the oak-leaf type provides premium market appeal and maintains its vibrancy throughout the cold chain.
• Harvest Efficiency: The leaf rosette is compact and dense, which is ideal for mechanized harvesting processes, leading to cleaner cuts and less post-harvest waste.

From an operator's perspective, this hybrid is remarkably stable. It doesn't bolt prematurely under fluctuating light or temperature conditions, providing a critical buffer for harvest management. The leaves maintain their structure and crunch, which ensures a longer shelf life—an essential factor for retail supply chains. Prunai delivers the reliability that simplifies operational planning in a demanding agricultural environment.
