The Rijk Zwaan breeding program in the Lollo Bionda segment has reached a new level with the introduction of the Aleppo hybrid. Genetic engineers focused not only on the aesthetics of the marketable head but on creating an "armored" plant capable of mitigating risks during intensive cultivation in protected or open ground.

Phytosanitary resistance: the foundation of yield

The key feature of Aleppo is its comprehensive genetic protection. In conditions of high humidity and temperature fluctuations, plants are often subjected to stresses that provoke pathogens. Aleppo has built-in resistance mechanisms against the following threats:

• Verticillium and Fusarium wilt: the defense works by preventing vascular system occlusion, maintaining leaf turgor even under peak physiological stress.
• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV): selective breeding has eliminated vulnerability to major strains of this virus, preventing leaf deformation.
• Cladosporium (CMM): high resistance allows for minimizing fungicide application, which is crucial for producing high-quality, eco-friendly crops.

These parameters make the hybrid highly predictable in production. For an agronomist, this translates into lower pesticide costs and a stable output of marketable produce without the high rejection rates typically caused by vascular or fungal infections.
