Lettuce Optimist

Reliable Iceberg yields in diverse conditions

Selecting a hybrid for commercial Iceberg lettuce production often involves balancing head density with disease resistance. The "Optimist" variety from the Dutch company Enza Limited addresses this challenge, offering growers predictable results in the field. Its primary advantage is high adaptability to environmental stressors, making it a preferred choice for those planning consistent supply chains for supermarket retailers.

Practical cultivation advantages

• Resistance for profitability: The major challenge in lettuce cultivation is downy mildew (Bremia lactucae). "Optimist" features built-in genetic resistance, significantly reducing the need for fungicide applications and minimizing leaf damage.
• Head development: The plant produces a dense, uniform head, which is ideal for mechanized harvesting. The medium mass of the heads is considered the "gold standard" for retail, as these heads are easier to pack and maintain superior quality during transport.
• Field performance: The hybrid shows excellent uniformity. This is critical for farms utilizing flow-based harvesting: when plants reach maturity simultaneously, the efficiency of field operations increases significantly.

Investing in this variety is ideal for farms aiming for a premium, clean product with an extended shelf life. The reduced risk of tip burn combined with high leaf density ensures an excellent yield per hectare, making the investment in Enza Limited seeds worthwhile from the very first harvest cycle.
