Lettuce Meridian

Why Meridian by Sakata is a professional choice in the Iceberg segment

Cultivating Iceberg lettuce requires agronomic precision: the variety must not only form a firm, crisp head but also remain resilient against pathogens throughout the cycle. The Japanese breeding school of Sakata has prioritized predictability and reliability in the Meridian model.

Key Advantages

• Technological Resilience: The primary challenge for lettuce plantations — downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) — is not a critical threat to this variety. Its genetic defense allows for a reduction in fungicide applications.
• Mass Stability: Depending on cultivation conditions, the plant forms medium to large heads. This allows farmers to adjust flexibly to retail requirements by managing planting density.
• Structure and Marketability: Meridian is known for its distinct crunch and the classic architecture of a premium Iceberg rosette. The head is dense, which minimizes damage during transport and extends shelf life.

Who is this hybrid for?

This lettuce is ideal for farms supplying retail chains and the HoReCa sector. If your priority is high-value produce where both yield and visual appeal are essential, Meridian is a reliable tool. It forgives minor inconsistencies in irrigation, though it reaches its maximum potential under intensive fertilization programs.

A weak point? Like any specialized Iceberg, Meridian requires close attention to temperature. During extreme heat, intensive overhead irrigation is necessary to prevent tipburn, a condition common to all Iceberg types under stress.
