Description
Agrotechnical Guidelines for Growing Hamlin Lettuce
Hamlin, a lettuce variety from the Dutch breeder Rijk Zwaan, officially registered in Ukraine in 2026, is designed for high-yield professional production. Achieving its full genetic potential requires precise adherence to cultivation protocols.
Planting and Soil Management
To ensure optimal development of the rosette, specific environmental conditions must be met:
- Soil Requirements: The variety performs best in well-drained, fertile soils with a pH range of 6.0–7.0. Proper soil preparation is essential to prevent root zone compaction.
- Planting Density: A density of 10–12 plants per square meter is recommended. This spacing is critical for maintaining adequate airflow, which naturally suppresses the development of fungal diseases.
- Timing: For open-field cultivation, transplanting should occur once soil temperatures consistently exceed +10°C. In greenhouse settings, the variety demonstrates excellent adaptability to controlled light and temperature cycles.
Irrigation and Nutrient Management
Hamlin requires consistent moisture levels throughout its growth cycle. Drip irrigation is the preferred method, as it delivers water directly to the root zone without wetting the foliage, thereby reducing the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Fluctuations in soil moisture can lead to premature bolting or tip burn.
Nutrient management should be phased. During the early vegetative stage, balanced NPK fertilization is necessary. However, as the rosette matures, nitrogen levels should be moderated to prevent excessive leaf succulence and nitrate accumulation. Increasing potassium intake during the final stages of growth is recommended to improve leaf turgor and post-harvest shelf life.
