The 2025 novelty from Rijk Zwaan, the Odona variety, is a classic lettuce type characterized by an intense green color and a dense, yet neat leaf structure. Due to its genetically inherent stability and morphology, this variety requires adherence to specific technological protocols to reach its full potential.

Sowing and Plant Density

Odona forms a medium-diameter plant with an upright leaf position at the 10–12 leaf stage. This allows for high-density planting schemes. The optimal density for producing a small, moderately dense head is 12–14 plants per square meter. When sowing (white seeds), it is crucial to ensure a planting depth of no more than 0.5–1 cm, as lettuce seeds are sensitive to light and burial depth.

Soil and Irrigation Requirements

The variety performs excellently in light, well-drained soils with a pH level of 6.0–7.0. Since Odona leaves have moderate blistering and significant thickness, the plant requires a stable moisture level. Sharp fluctuations between waterlogging and substrate drying can lead to leaf deformation. Drip irrigation is the preferred method, maintaining soil moisture at 70–80% of field capacity.

Care Throughout Development Phases

• Seedling Phase: The absence of anthocyanin coloration and the elliptical shape of the cotyledons indicate strong initial growth. During this period, it is critical to avoid overcrowding to prevent hypocotyl elongation.
• Active Growth Phase: Odona is characterized by an upright position of the outer leaves even at harvest maturity. This facilitates air circulation within the crop and reduces the risk of fungal diseases.
• Head Formation Phase: Given the weak overlapping of the upper leaves, the variety is not prone to excessive compaction, ensuring excellent marketability and ease of harvesting.

The intense green color and rounded leaf tip are maintained even under high temperatures, making Odona a promising choice for continuous production throughout the season.
