Lettuce Coulthard

Technological Features of the Cult-Hard Hybrid

Rijk Zwaan's breeding program for Batavia-type leafy greens is focused on maximum adaptability for intensive vegetable production. The Cult-Hard hybrid represents years of work in stabilizing genetic traits aimed at mitigating production risks.

Phytosanitary Resistance as a Foundation for Profitability

The key engineering solution in the Cult-Hard genotype is its built-in resistance to critical threats in lettuce cultivation. A high level of resistance to downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) allows for a significant reduction in fungicide use, optimizing production costs and simplifying integration into organic farming schemes. A specific barrier against lettuce aphid (Nasonovia ribisnigri) eliminates the risk of loss of marketability due to pest colonization, which is critical for the fresh market.

Morphology and Vegetative Cycle

The Batavia type ensures the formation of a voluminous, dense rosette with a pronounced leaf structure. The green shade and early maturity allow for a conveyor system of supply, minimizing the time the crop spends in the field. Main technical parameters:

• Plant Type: Batavia, optimized for mechanical harvesting.
• Color Profile: Deep green, maintained under various light conditions.
• Maturity: Early, ensuring rapid capital turnover.
• Protection Complex: Comprehensive resistance to key pathogens and pests.

Utilizing the Cult-Hard hybrid is a strategic choice for farming operations aiming for predictable yields and high marketability without the need for aggressive chemical protection.
