Lettuce Weber

Technological Advantages of the Weber Hybrid

The Weber lettuce variety from Rijk Zwaan represents a high-tech tool for intensive vegetable production. Classified as an 'Oak Leaf' type, this hybrid is optimized to ensure consistent marketable yields, even in environments where pathogens typically limit production profitability.

Biological Defense and Resistance

The core engineering solution within the Weber genotype is its comprehensive defense system against the most aggressive threats. Rijk Zwaan’s breeding process focuses on creating robust barriers against:

• Downy Mildew (Bremia lactucae): The incorporated resistance genes reduce the need for fungicide applications, which is critical for producing premium-quality lettuce with a short production cycle.
• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV): Protection against systemic viral diseases ensures the structural integrity of the leaves. This prevents deformations that would otherwise lead to post-harvest rejection during grading.

Agronomic Performance and Marketability

The early maturity of this hybrid enables dense, efficient crop rotation. Weber’s visual appeal—characterized by its vibrant green color and classic oak leaf shape—makes it highly sought after in both retail and culinary sectors. The biomass accumulation rate is perfectly balanced, facilitating accurate harvest scheduling. Because the variety is adapted to Dutch breeding standards, it demonstrates high uniformity in both greenhouse and open-field conditions, which streamlines the mechanization of harvesting and packaging processes.
