Smooth brome Rafael

German precision in forage production

When you are planning your forage strategy, you need reliability, not experiments. "Rafael," a variety from Deutsche Saatveredelung, has become a staple for farms that prioritize consistent biomass output. As an operator, what you appreciate first is the predictable performance — this brome grass behaves exactly as it should, season after season.

Field performance and adaptation

The standout feature of Rafael is its seedling vigor. Getting a uniform stand is 80% of the success in forage management, and this German variety makes it easier. It establishes quickly, which is a massive relief when your planting window is tight. Once established, it shows impressive resilience to lodging, making the harvest much smoother. Whether you are using it for salad mixes or intensive fodder, the recovery time between cuts is remarkably short, allowing for a more efficient harvest schedule.

Feed value and utility

The quality of the forage is what ultimately matters for the herd. Rafael provides a soft, palatable leaf that retains its nutrient value even if the harvest is slightly delayed. Animals tend to show a preference for it over coarser grasses, which translates into better intake rates. From an operational standpoint, the cleanliness of the seed from Deutsche Saatveredelung is a huge plus — you are paying for the product, not for weeds or inert matter, which makes your seeding rate calculations accurate and saves you money.

Maintenance and maintenance-free habits

Managing a Rafael stand is straightforward. It is responsive to nitrogen, but it doesn't require complex maintenance protocols. Because the grass forms a dense, aggressive sod, it does a great job of suppressing weeds on its own, which significantly reduces the need for herbicide intervention in the second and third years of the stand's life. It is a durable, high-performance crop that stays productive when you treat it with basic, timely care.

In short, Rafael is for those who want to avoid the guesswork and rely on high-quality, professional genetics from a leader like Deutsche Saatveredelung.
