Hazelnut Otaman

Why Otaman is the Benchmark for Industrial Hazelnuts

The Ukrainian hazelnut variety 'Otaman' is the result of years of breeding focused on creating the perfect nut for commercial production. Unlike many foreign analogs that require specific climatic conditions, this variety shows remarkable adaptability to the temperate climate while maintaining high yield rates.

Key Features and Specifications

• Shape: perfectly round, which is a major advantage for automated grading lines.
• Taste: dessert-quality, with high fat content and a distinct nutty aroma, making it highly sought after in the confectionery industry.
• Growth Vigor: the variety forms a sturdy bush with a powerful root system, allowing it to withstand dry spells effectively and successfully endure cold winters in Ukrainian latitudes.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The main advantage of 'Otaman' lies in the stability of its kernel yield — the kernel separates easily from the shell, significantly reducing processing losses. Additionally, the variety is resistant to most fungal diseases common to nut crops in our region, which allows for a reduction in fungicide applications. However, it is crucial to remember: to obtain maximum yields, 'Otaman' strictly requires pollinator varieties planted in the vicinity. Without them, there is a significant risk of encountering barren flowers.

This variety is optimal for farmers planning a long-term business and aiming to sell premium-grade nuts or establish their own processing facilities. It is not a "low-maintenance" variety — it requires crown training and regular pruning, but the return in terms of marketable quality more than justifies the investment of effort.
