Hazelnut Silver

Genetic Potential and Morphology of the «Серебристий» Variety

The «Серебристий» hazelnut variety, developed by the Ukrainian Research Institute of Forestry and Forest Melioration named after G.M. Vysotsky, is the result of targeted efforts to adapt wild forest forms to commercial and small-scale cultivation conditions. The primary value of this variety lies in its predictable yield and resistance to local climate stressors.

Technical Specifications of the Nut

• Mass and Calibration: The average nut weight ranges between 2.5–3 grams, which is an optimal metric for commercial batches intended for mechanical processing.
• Geometry and Shape: The elongated shape simplifies primary cleaning and calibration on automated lines, reducing the percentage of kernel damage during shelling.
• Shell Constitution: The density and thickness of the shell provide robust protection for the kernel against pests while maintaining sufficient brittleness for efficient processing.

Agrotechnical Insights

The «Серебристий» variety demonstrates high adaptability to the soil composition typical of the Ukrainian Forest-Steppe zone. The institutional foundation of the UкрНДІЛГА allows this material to be classified as a verified selection achievement backed by field trials. In practice, this manifests as balanced bush growth and consistent annual generative bud formation. Utilizing this specific genetics allows farmers to minimize expenditures on specialized protective measures, as the variety possesses an inherent immune response developed during its creation at the specialized research institution.
