Corn Kharkivskiy 290 MV is a medium-early double-row hybrid with FAO 290, developed by breeders of the Institute of Plant Selection named after V.Ya. Yuryev of UAAN through crossing the maternal form of simple hybrid Kharkivskiy 23 MC with the parental form of simple hybrid Kharkivskiy 40 MV. Plants reach a height of 220-240 cm, have 11-12 above-ground nodes and 16-17 leaves. The ear is cylindrical, forms at a height of about 80 cm, is 22 cm long and weighs 280 g, with 16 rows of kernels. The ear tip is well shelled and fully covered by husk, the ear stalk is red. Kernels are dent-shaped, yellow, with a grain yield of 79.3% and 1000-kernel weight of 290 g, containing 9.0% protein.
The hybrid is characterized by high cold resistance (4.7 points) and good drought tolerance, allowing it to be successfully grown in various climatic zones of Ukraine, especially in forest-steppe and steppe regions. It is tolerant to stalk rot, gray and bubble smut, and resistant to damage by corn borer at standard levels. The vegetation period varies depending on the growing zone: 110 days in steppe, 124 days in forest-steppe, and 131 days in Polissia. Grain moisture at maturity ranges from 23.9% to 30.6%.
Kharkivskiy 290 MV is distinguished by high productivity. In the forest-steppe zone, the average yield over competitive trials amounted to 81.7 centners per hectare, exceeding national standards by 2.7 centners per hectare. The maximum yield was recorded in 1999 on a trial plot in the Cherkasy region and amounted to 113.8 centners per hectare. Hybrid seed production is conducted on a sterile basis with complete fertility restoration. Due to the high rate of grain drying after maturity, the time required for seed preparation for storage is reduced, which is an additional advantage for farmers.
