Astakhov Memorial cherries represent a medium-late universal variety with high adaptability, suitable for cultivation in various climatic conditions, including the central region and northern areas. The tree reaches a height of about 4 meters, has a spreading canopy with a moderate degree of densification and raised branches. Blooming begins at the end of May, while fruit ripening occurs in late July; in southern regions, flowering and ripening periods occur 1-2 weeks earlier. The variety is self-sterile and requires pollinators such as Revna, Tyutchevka, Iput, and Ovtuzhenka to ensure good fruiting. Cross-pollination with sweet cherries is also possible, though it may negatively affect yield and fruit quality.
The fruits of 'Astakhov Memorial' cherries have a light-red or dark-red color, round shape, and weigh from 4 to 6 grams. The berries feature firm flesh and a thin but hard skin, ensuring good transportability and refrigerated storage for up to two weeks. The taste is sweet with high sugar content (around 14.6%) and vitamin C (approximately 19.2 mg%), making them particularly attractive to consumers. During harvest, the berries easily detach from the pedicel without damage, facilitating the picking process and reducing losses.
The variety is characterized by a medium yield, reaching 50 to 80 kilograms per tree with proper agricultural technology and favorable conditions. The cherries possess high frost resistance, withstanding temperatures down to -30 to -32°C, corresponding to frost hardiness zone 4. Drought resistance is moderate: the plant can survive without additional irrigation for a month without a decrease in fruiting. Additionally, 'Astakhov Memorial' is distinguished by its disease resistance, which eases care and enhances yield stability.
