Basil Kapriz

A Spicy Classic with Personality

The 'Kapriz' variety, developed by experts at the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production, is a unique attempt to combine aesthetics with intense flavor. Unlike standard basil, this hybrid stands out due to its unusual pigmentation: its ruffled, corrugated leaves transition beautifully from green to a deep, rich purple. This makes the plant not just a kitchen staple, but a striking decorative element for both gardens and windowsills.

Key Strengths

• Culinary Versatility: With a robust spicy aroma and rich taste, this basil is ideal for fresh salads and custom spice blends.
• Practicality: The 40–50 cm plant height makes it perfect for commercial production, where uniformity is key, as well as for home growing.
• Structural Advantage: The corrugated texture of the leaves holds dressings and oils effectively, a quality highly valued by professional chefs.

Kapriz requires slightly more attention to light levels compared to monochromatic green varieties to fully bring out its deep purple hues. It is an optimal choice for those seeking a balance between visual appeal and gastronomic quality. Its greatest strength lies in the consistency of its characteristics—ensured by authors V.F. Pivovarov and S.N. Kravchenko—providing predictable results with every harvest.
