Barley Alex

Versatility and Phytosanitary Resilience

The «Alex» barley variety, developed by the Bvs+ breeding center, is a high-performance agricultural solution adapted to diverse climatic conditions. Its primary technical advantage lies in its biological plasticity: it is successfully cultivated as both a spring and winter barley. This flexibility allows agronomists to optimize crop rotation strategies based on soil health and seasonal weather forecasts.

Advanced Biological Defense

The breeding focus for «Alex» centers on genetic resistance to key pathogens that typically threaten barley yields. The built-in protection system targets three critical areas:

• Helminthosporiosis: The variety exhibits high resistance to spotting diseases, ensuring the leaf area remains active for photosynthesis until the grain filling stage.
• Rust: Its genetic defense against rust prevents premature senescence of the leaves, which is vital for the development of fully formed, high-weight grains.
• Powdery Mildew: The plant’s architectural morphology and epidermal resistance limit the spread of infection, even in dense canopy environments with high humidity.

The practical result of this resistance is a significant reduction in the required chemical inputs. The integrated protection traits provided by Bvs+ allow farmers to minimize fungicide applications, lowering production costs while maintaining yield quality and overall output.

Operational Performance

«Alex» is characterized by vigorous tillering and uniform crop maturation, which minimizes harvest losses. Regardless of whether it is sown in the autumn or spring, the variety demonstrates excellent root system development, ensuring strong plant establishment and resilience to early spring moisture deficits.
