Pentodon
The most prominent species, Pentodon idiota, is known for causing economic damage in the southern regions where it impacts various field crops. It belongs to the family Scarabaeidae, notorious for its soil-dwelling larvae and wood-boring or root-feeding adults.
Adult beetles damage plants by burrowing into the roots and the base of the stems. This mechanical injury interferes with nutrient and water uptake, frequently resulting in the wilting and death of young seedlings shortly after emergence.
Pentodon primarily threatens crops such as maize, sunflowers, sugar beets, and diverse vegetable varieties. The pest pressure is particularly acute during drought periods when the beetles actively feed on the succulent tissues of the plants to survive.
Effective control measures include the use of systematic seed treatments with insecticides, strict adherence to crop rotation cycles, and deep autumn tillage, which helps to expose and eliminate soil-dwelling larvae before they reach maturity.
