Perama

The genus thrives in humid and well-drained soil environments. They are frequently observed on sandy substrates that are naturally low in essential nutrients, as well as in open savanna-like landscapes known as campo rupestre.

Successful growth requires consistently high temperatures throughout the entire vegetative stage, combined with adequate and regular moisture levels. The plant is sensitive to waterlogging, necessitating agricultural practices that ensure proper root aeration.

Botanically, Perama is characterized by erect stems, with leaves arranged in an opposite or whorled pattern. The inflorescences are generally compact, featuring small, often white or yellowish flowers, which is a common trait within the Rubiaceae family.

The economic utilization of this crop is currently limited to specific niche applications. In local traditional practices, certain species are utilized for their secondary metabolites, although commercial cultivation remains experimental and is not yet widespread.
