The plant is highly regarded for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities through root nodules. This biological feature enhances soil fertility, making it an excellent choice for agroforestry, windbreaks, and land reclamation projects.
It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun. While it can survive on poor, rocky, or sandy substrates, optimal development requires well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
The cultivation of Elaeagnus does not require intensive irrigation. Once established, the root system is deep and efficient, allowing the plant to sustain itself under minimal rainfall conditions.
Oleaster is naturally resistant to most common orchard diseases, which contributes to its reputation as a low-maintenance agricultural crop.
In humid climates, some species may be susceptible to fungal leaf spots or powdery mildew if there is poor air circulation. Proper spacing during planting is the best preventative strategy.
Pest issues are generally minimal. Occasionally, aphids or scale insects may colonize young shoots, but these outbreaks are rarely severe enough to necessitate chemical intervention.
