Globe dodder

The plant utilizes specialized structures called haustoria to anchor itself onto host stems. These organs penetrate the vascular tissues of the host, siphoning off water, minerals, and carbohydrates, which inevitably compromises the growth, yield, and overall survival of infested crops.

The natural habitat of this species is found in temperate and warmer regions across several continents. It primarily infests broad-leaved crops, perennial grasses, and shrubs. Due to its climbing nature, it quickly forms dense, tangled mats that smother the host plant, effectively blocking sunlight and interfering with gas exchange.

Botanically, this dodder is named for its distinctive globose, or ball-shaped, flower clusters. Its seeds are extremely resilient and can remain dormant in the soil for years, waiting for favorable conditions or the presence of a suitable host plant to germinate and initiate the parasitic process.

Economically, globe dodder is considered a serious quarantine weed in many jurisdictions. Agricultural impacts include massive yield losses, reduced fodder quality due to potential toxicity to livestock, and the high cost of implementation of quarantine measures required to stop its spread across agricultural landscapes.
