Biology and life cycle: Ants undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The colony structure is strictly hierarchical, and the survival of the nest depends on the queen's egg-laying capacity. They typically build nests in the soil, under rocks, or in rotting wood. Their activity levels peak during warm spring and summer months when they forage for food and tend to their aphids.

Host plants and damage: Ants affect a vast range of plants, including fruit trees, berry bushes, and vegetables. Their primary damage is indirect but severe. By "farming" aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs, ants protect these pests from predators like ladybugs. This symbiotic relationship leads to massive outbreaks of sap-sucking insects that devastate crops.

Economic significance: Ants cause significant losses by hindering the normal development of plants. Aphids weaken the host by draining nutrients, leading to stunted growth, leaf curling, and the transmission of viral diseases. Furthermore, ant mounds near the root zone can disrupt soil aeration and cause mechanical damage to young, tender roots, leading to the dehydration and potential death of seedlings.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Frequent cultivation of soil to disrupt underground tunnels.
