Commonly referred to as "stubby root nematodes," these microscopic organisms are significant soil-borne pests in agriculture. They possess a specialized feeding apparatus known as an onchiostyle, which is a hollow, slightly curved tube used to penetrate and feed on the cells of root meristems.

These nematodes have a wide host range, attacking various economically important crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, onions, cereals, and many ornamental plants. Damage is most severe on young seedlings during the early stages of growth, as the nematode feeding inhibits the development of the root system, leading to stunted plant growth and poor nutrient uptake.
The life cycle of Trichodoridae occurs in the soil, and they are highly active in light, sandy, or coarse-textured soils with adequate moisture. They do not penetrate inside the roots but feed from the outside, moving rapidly between soil particles. Their ability to survive in various soil depths and their high reproductive rate make them resilient pests in diverse agricultural environments.
The primary direct damage manifests as "stubby roots"—short, thickened, and stunted root systems with little to no root hairs. However, the most severe economic impact stems from their role as vectors for tobraviruses, specifically the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). This virus causes internal necrosis in potato tubers, often referred to as "spraing," which significantly reduces the marketability and quality of the harvest.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include: 1) Crop rotation with non-host crops to reduce population levels. 2) Rigorous weed control, as many weeds harbor the TRV virus. 3) Use of resistant or tolerant cultivars. 4) Pre-planting soil fumigation or the application of nematicides in fields with a history of infestation. 5) Ensuring the use of pathogen-free, certified seed tubers.
