It is scientifically inaccurate to classify Libellulidae as plant pests. They do not feed on plant tissues, stems, or fruits. As obligate carnivores, their role is restricted to preying upon other insects, making them essential components of natural pest management in agricultural landscapes.
Their life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. The aquatic nymph stage is highly predatory, consuming various small aquatic organisms. Once they emerge as adults, they transition to aerial hunting, utilizing their excellent vision and flight mechanics to capture prey on the wing.
The damage potential of Libellulidae to crops is zero. Instead, they act as important biological control agents, significantly reducing populations of agricultural pests such as mosquitoes, flies, and various moths. Their presence indicates high biodiversity and ecological health in the surrounding area.
No protection measures against skimmers are necessary. To encourage their presence, farmers should avoid the overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides, especially near ponds and irrigation ditches, as these chemicals can harm both the nymphs and the beneficial adult dragonflies.
