Winter wheat ELLI

Genetic Potential of Selgen «Elli»

Czech breeding expertise from Selgen traditionally focuses on adaptability to the unstable conditions of a temperate climate. The winter wheat variety «Elli» is the result of years of work by the originator on stabilizing the phytosanitary status of crops under conditions of high humidity and infection pressure.

Phytopathological Resistance as a Yield Foundation

The technical value of «Elli» lies in its complex resistance to key pathogens that limit spike productivity:

• Brown Rust: genetically encoded protection minimizes the risk of premature desiccation of the leaf apparatus, which is critical for grain filling.
• Septoria: the variety demonstrates high tolerance to leaf infection, allowing it to maintain the photosynthetic surface area even during prolonged spring rains.
• Powdery Mildew: thanks to a dense epidermal structure and specific resistance genes, the variety successfully suppresses infection development without the need for additional fungicide applications at early stages.
• Fusarium Head Blight: the unique spike architecture prevents the penetration of fungal spores, ensuring high-quality market grain free from mycotoxins.

For agronomists, utilizing «Elli» is a strategy for optimizing plant protection systems. The crop’s high intrinsic resistance allows for adjusted treatment schedules or a reduction in the frequency of expensive chemical applications. The originator, Selgen A.S., has focused on the balance between vegetative mass and generative development, which in practice yields stable volumes of high-quality grain that meets EU standards.
