Burgunka wheat is a high-yield winter soft wheat variety developed by Ukrainian breeders, suitable for cultivation on both irrigated and non-irrigated lands. It is an early-maturing variety with plant height ranging from 85 to 100 cm and thousand-grain weight of 41.0–43.2 g. A key feature is its high protein content — 13.5–14.0% — which ensures high bread-making quality (4.6–5.0 points). The recommended seeding rate is 4.0–5.0 million viable seeds per hectare, contributing to optimal yield.
The variety exhibits high resistance to various diseases and stress factors, including lodging, shattering, root rots, septoria, fusarium, brown rust, and powdery mildew, confirmed by high resistance ratings. Additionally, Burgunka has excellent winter hardiness (7 points) and high drought tolerance (9 points), making it particularly suitable for cultivation in steppe zones with variable climatic conditions. The potential yield reaches 9.0 tons per hectare, indicating its high productivity.
In addition to food use, Burgunka wheat is widely used in animal husbandry as a forage crop for compound feed production. The grain contains significant amounts of protein, B and E vitamins, lysine, and phosphorus, making it nutritious and beneficial for animals. However, grain moisture should not exceed 15% to ensure quality and storage stability. Although this variety is not intended for food use, it serves as an effective alternative to corn in agriculture due to its high yield and economic efficiency.
