Description Morastel
Morastel grape is a western European red technical variety originating from Spain, where it is widely cultivated and known as Monastrell. This variety is characterized by vigorous vines with dense, slightly lobed leaves, which may develop wine-red spots as berries ripen. Morastel berries are round, dark blue, covered with a dense waxy bloom, with a thick skin that protects them from damage and helps preserve their juicy, melting flesh with harmonious flavor. The average cluster weight is about 124 grams, and the sugar content of the berries reaches 19-20 g/100 ml with acidity of 7-8 g/l. The average growing season for this variety lasts 163 days, ensuring good fruit ripening. Morastel has moderate yield, with up to 62% of shoots on the vine being fruit-bearing. The variety is highly drought-resistant and adaptable to soil conditions, preferring well-heated, calcareous soils. However, it is susceptible to certain fungal diseases: resistant to oidium and gray mold, but vulnerable to mildew and anthracnose, requiring careful care and prevention. The variety has moderate frost resistance — buds freeze at temperatures below -21°C. Morastel is widely used in winemaking, serving as the basis for producing noble wines such as the famous Bandol wine from Provence. Due to its technical characteristics and flavor qualities, this variety is valued for its ability to produce rich, harmonious wines with distinctive flavor. For successful cultivation, plantings should be located on well-heated areas with optimal humidity, avoiding excessive soil moisture during early vegetative growth.
