Description Italian Riesling
Italian Riesling — a technical variety of white grape belonging to the Western European eco-geographic group. This variety is characterized by a medium-late to late ripening period, occurring at the beginning of the third decade of September, and a period from bud break to harvest maturity lasting approximately 148-160 days. The leaves are egg-shaped or round with 3-5 lobes, deeply or weakly divided. The clusters are usually cylindrical or cylindrical-conical in shape, dense or loose, of medium size. The berries are small to medium-sized, round, light green or greenish-yellow in color with dark spots, thin but tough skin, and juicy flesh with a harmonious flavor and distinct aroma characteristic of Riesling. The variety exhibits strong growth vigor and good cane maturation. It is hermaphroditic, promoting stable fruiting, although its yield is relatively low; attempts to increase yield may negatively affect berry quality. Each berry contains 2-4 seeds, with optimal sugar content around 17-18% and acidity of 0.9-1.1%. Due to these characteristics, this grape is widely used for producing white wines with a rich bouquet, including mineral, floral, chalk, and honey notes. Italian Riesling is cultivated in various viticultural regions of Europe, including the Balkans, Hungary, Austria, Italy, and Germany, where it accounts for approximately 60% of the total volume of this variety. The variety is winter-hardy and less susceptible to early spring frosts due to its late bud break. However, it is sensitive to certain diseases such as oidium, grape berry rot, and mildew, as well as infestation by spider mites and grape cluster moth. The variety has low phylloxera resistance, requiring special attention during cultivation.
