Description Muscat Bailey A
Muscat Bailey A is a technical variety of white grape, widely grown in Hungary and Bulgaria, and also developed through selection at the Fruit Experimental Station of TSXA. The plants are medium-sized with hermaphroditic flowers, eliminating the need for additional pollination. The clusters are oval and loose, weighing about 200-300 grams, with berries of oval shape, green-yellow color with a waxy bloom, weighing 2-3 grams. The flesh is juicy and has a distinctly muscat aroma, making this grape particularly valuable for producing liqueur-style dessert wines. The variety ripens early to mid-season — around 120 days — allowing for harvest at optimal times. Muscat Bailey A has moderate disease resistance and good cold hardiness, tolerating temperatures down to -24 °C. The grape is easy to transport and can remain on the vine for long periods without damage or berry splitting, which is important for maintaining quality during transport and storage. Chemically, the berries have moderate sugar content of about 20-22.5 g/100 ml and acidity of approximately 5.4 g/l, ensuring a balanced flavor and aroma in the final product. The yield of the variety is 90-100 centners per hectare, making it profitable for commercial cultivation. Due to its qualities and characteristics, Muscat Bailey A is widely used for producing high-quality dessert wines with a rich muscat bouquet.
