Sercial — a technical hermaphroditic grape variety originating from Portugal, specifically the island of Madeira. This light-skinned variety belongs to the eco-geographical group of North African grapes and is characterized by a medium ripening period and good yield. The berries of Sercial are light yellow, juicy, with a tart-sweet flavor, making it ideal for producing high-quality Madeira and Sherry wines. However, the variety is susceptible to diseases such as oidium, mildew, and gray rot, and is also not resistant to frost. Optimal growing conditions include moist, nutrient-rich soils.
Wines made from Sercial are known for their lightness, freshness, and high acidity, which exceeds the acidity of wines from the Verdelho variety. This acidic structure contributes to slow aging and development of the wine, allowing Madeira wines from Sercial to reach their peak later than other varieties. The wines exhibit nutty and almond aromas, as well as a very dry finish. The variety retains its characteristic acidity even in old age and can continue to evolve in the bottle for several decades.
Sercial vines are typically grown in cooler regions of Madeira at altitudes up to 1000 meters, which influences the late harvest — approximately one month later than other varieties such as Bual, Tinta Negra Mole, and Verdelho, grown on sunny slopes. Due to these characteristics, Sercial is a unique variety prized for its quality and ability to produce wines with long aging potential and complex bouquet.
