Vegetable Pea VILLE

Working with Ville Pea

When working with vegetable peas, balancing rapid maturity with market quality is essential. The "Ville" variety from the Hungarian breeder ZKI ZKI Rt. is a prime example of achieving consistent results within a 50–60 day timeframe. In field conditions, this variety performs predictably, which is a major advantage for planning an efficient crop rotation.

Practical Insights

The pods are characterized by a sharp, pointed shape, making them convenient for manual harvesting. Each pod contains 7–8 large, uniform peas. This large-seeded trait is exactly why "Ville" stands out; it provides a high-quality product that is perfect for both fresh market sales and home freezing, maintaining excellent presentation.

Durability and Protection

Legumes are often vulnerable to soil-borne pathogens and foliage diseases. However, the breeding efforts of ZKI Zoldsegtermesztesi Kutato Intezet Zrt have given "Ville" strong natural resistance to Fusarium wilt and powdery mildew. This significantly reduces the need for frequent fungicide applications, saving both time and inputs.

• Maturity: 50–60 days to technical ripeness.
• Yield characteristics: 7–8 large peas per pod.
• Disease resistance: High tolerance to Fusarium and powdery mildew.

For those managing this crop, we recommend focusing on consistent irrigation during the pod-filling stage. Proper water management ensures that the peas remain tender and sweet without becoming starchy. Given its quick cycle, "Ville" is an ideal choice for early planting, allowing growers to clear the field for a second crop by mid-summer.
