Tulip Attila

Practical Guide to Cultivating 'Attila' Tulips

For those managing commercial forcing or open-field production, the 'Attila' tulip (Triumph class) stands out as a reliable and resilient choice. This variety is valued by growers for its ability to combine aesthetic appeal with low maintenance requirements, making it an efficient asset for any floral operation.

Disease Resistance and Crop Protection

The primary advantage of Attila is its robust genetic resistance to common fungal pathogens. On a practical level, this reduces the frequency of necessary fungicide applications, saving both labor and input costs. This variety shows significant resistance to:

• Downy mildew (Peronospora);
• Phomopsis and Phoma blight;
• Tulip rust.

By minimizing the risk of these infections, the grower can focus resources elsewhere, ensuring a healthier and more uniform crop without the constant need for aggressive chemical intervention.

Operational Performance

Attila is a mid-season, medium-height variety that holds its form exceptionally well. The petals are firm, which ensures that the blooms maintain their commercial grade long after cutting—a vital factor for logistics and shelf-life. Because it reaches its peak during the mid-season, it integrates seamlessly into a succession planting schedule, allowing for efficient harvest management.

When maintaining Attila, it is essential to prioritize soil drainage. Despite its strong disease resistance, excessive soil moisture remains a risk factor for root health. Ensuring proper airflow and moderate irrigation will produce consistently strong stems and vibrant, deep lilac blooms that are highly sought after by the market.
