Description Ukrainka
Timothy grass (Phleum pratense) is a monocotyledonous herbaceous species belonging to the Poaceae family and is widely used as a forage crop in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Ukraine. The plant is cold-hardy and mesophytic, capable of developing under moderate soil moisture, but requires sufficient water and cannot withstand prolonged droughts. It grows well on clay, loamy, and sandy-loam soils, as well as on acidic or poor soils, making it suitable for cultivation in conditions of low fertility.

Agrotechnical features include sowing in spring (April) or autumn periods. The planting depth is 1–2 cm, and the optimal growth temperature is 15–20 °C. Before sowing, the soil is cleared of weeds and prepared by loosening to a depth of 25 cm; for early spring sowing, manure is added (30 t/ha). The crop responds well to fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones, which increases yield. After each mowing, harrowing is carried out to enrich the soil with oxygen.

Timothy grass has a high protein content (approximately 4 kg/m² in hay) and beneficial fatty acids, making it a valuable feed for all types of animals. Hay is harvested during bud formation when its nutritional value is highest; later-cut mass has a larger volume but lower content of useful substances. Hay yield can reach 10 t/ha, and green mass yield – over 200 c/ha. In addition to forage use, the plant is used in landscape design for creating lawns and greening parks, as well as as a cover crop for cereal crops.

Timothy grass is grown in pure stands (up to 12 kg/ha) or in mixtures with sainfoin or clover (up to 6 kg/ha). It is well grazed by animals and also has decorative value due to the green cover and high frost resistance. Cultivation conditions include moisture-loving, withstand flooding up to 30 days, but not suitable for dry sandy soils or long-term shade.
