Sunflower Sofiasol

European genetics for consistent yields

The Austrian breeding school has always been known for its commitment to resilience and adaptability. The sunflower hybrid «Sofiasol» by Probstdorfer Saatzucht Ges.m.b.H & KG is the result of years of expert research aimed at solving the primary challenge for farmers in a changing climate: ensuring high yields while minimizing losses from pathogens. As a key player under the Probstdorfer Saatzucht and Donau Saat brands, the originator has delivered a product that thrives in the diverse agricultural conditions of Central and Eastern Europe.

Phytopathological defense and morphology

One of the key features of Sofiasol is its robust resistance to pathogens that threaten farm profitability every season. The hybrid demonstrates strong tolerance to downy mildew (peronospora), making it a reliable choice for regions prone to high humidity. Furthermore, its genetic makeup provides effective protection against Sclerotinia and Phoma—diseases capable of devastating crops during the critical grain-filling phase.

Morphologically, the crop is distinguished by its semi-convex head shape. This geometry promotes better drying of seeds after precipitation, reducing the risks of gray mold. In terms of quality, the hybrid consistently delivers: oil content ranges between 45-50%, making it an excellent candidate for premium sunflower oil production.

Market positioning

Probstdorfer Saatzucht Ges.m.b.H & KG positions Sofiasol as a solution for farms prioritizing precision and efficiency. While this sunflower does not require complex or exotic cultivation practices, it reveals its full genetic potential when proper crop rotation and optimal sowing windows are managed. As both the originator and patent holder, Probstdorfer Saatzucht ensures high-purity seed stock, upholding the long-standing reputation of this renowned Austrian seed house in the global market.
