Field experience with Monsanto's Florian sunflower

When selecting a hybrid, reliability is what matters most. Working with Florian from Monsanto has shown that this hybrid is a workhorse for farmers who need stable results without the headache of constant intensive fungicide applications. Based on my seasons managing these fields, here is the breakdown.

Field Performance and Plant Architecture

Florian is a mid-season hybrid with a vegetation period of 100–110 days, fitting perfectly into standard harvest schedules. The plant height ranges from 160–170 cm. It is not overly tall, which significantly reduces the risk of lodging, yet it is sturdy enough for efficient harvesting. For an operator, this means less time cleaning the header and fewer losses behind the combine.

Disease Resistance and Stress Tolerance

The standout feature here is the natural resistance. Florian deals exceptionally well with the common "threat trio": Phomopsis, Phoma, and Powdery mildew. Most importantly, its resistance to White rot and Grey rot is reliable. We have seen this hybrid hold up in dense stands and humid patches where other varieties would start succumbing to head rot. This level of genetic protection often allows us to trim down on chemical intervention costs.

Quality and Economic Yield

With an oil content between 50–55%, this hybrid is highly valued by processors. It provides consistent grain quality, which helps in securing a better price per ton. The maturity is uniform across the field, which is vital for scheduling the harvest and minimizing moisture levels at delivery.
