Sugar beet variety Sidney is a unique Ukrainian product with a cylindrical root of large size and average weight of about 700 grams. The plant is characterized by medium ripening speed and a vegetation period up to 120 days. The root is deeply embedded in the soil, has a cylindrical-conical shape and a relatively smooth surface, which significantly reduces soil adhesion during harvesting. The leaf rosette is semi-erect, with medium-sized, entire, moderately wrinkled leaves. The root system is taprooted, penetrating to a depth of 2-2.5 meters, ensuring drought and cold resistance. The Sidney variety is highly resistant to diseases such as cercosporosis, powdery mildew, and root rot. Due to its universal and non-waste usage, all parts of the plant find application: in culinary use for making borscht and kvass, in feed production, as well as for technical purposes in sugar and molasses production. Sowing is recommended in April at a depth of 2-3 cm with row spacing of 50 cm and plant spacing of 20 cm. Harvesting is carried out from July to September. Sugar beet hybrids Sidney provide high yield and sugar content, reaching 17–18%. Yield ranges from 45 to 60 tons per hectare. The plant is cold-resistant, but requires moisture, especially during seed germination and root formation. Optimal growing conditions include soil with neutral acidity (pH 6.5-7.5), with lime application recommended for acidic soils. Sowing is conducted at a depth of 6-7 cm when soil temperature reaches 6-8°C, with plant density of 85-100 thousand plants per hectare.
