Sugar beet POL HR 17

Engineering Approach to Breeding: POL XP 17

Belgian breeding by Sesvanderhave Nv/Sa focuses on the balance between harvestability and sugar accumulation. The hybrid POL XP 17 is the result of years of research aimed at creating a root crop perfectly suited for intensive modern farming techniques.

Root Architecture and Morphology

The core technical feature of the POL XP 17 model is its cylindrical-conical shape. From an agronomic and mechanical harvesting perspective, this design provides distinct advantages:

• Loss Minimization: The shape allows harvesting machinery to easily extract the root from the soil with minimal 'tail' damage, which is critical for preventing decay during long-term storage in clamps.
• Shallow Positioning: The root has an optimal soil-depth profile. This simplifies the operation of toppers, reducing wear on mechanical components and minimizing soil and debris contamination in the harvested mass.

Adaptability and Potential

Sesvanderhave Nv/Sa designed this hybrid as a high-performance tool for consistent yields under variable climatic conditions. The cylindrical-conical configuration ensures uniform nutrient distribution throughout the growing season. With appropriate fertilization, the plant efficiently converts photosynthetic energy into sugar while maintaining structural tissue integrity. In practical terms, this results in high crop uniformity and compliance with strict sugar refinery standards for raw material quality.
