Sugar beet BTS 690

Genetic Potential and Productivity

The BTS 690 hybrid from the American breeding company Betaseed is a benchmark for high-yielding (type E) sugar beets. Under intensive farming conditions, this hybrid demonstrates a high capacity for root biomass accumulation, making it a primary choice for operations focused on maximizing raw material output.

Root Morphology

A key feature of BTS 690 is its wide-conical root shape. This geometry ensures optimal soil penetration, significantly simplifying mechanical harvesting. Minimal soil adhesion and a reduced risk of tail damage during lifting are essential for maintaining crop quality and storage longevity in clamps.

Biological Protection and Stress Resistance

The joint breeding efforts of Betaseed and KWS Saat SE & Co. KGaA focus on complex resistance to key field pathogens:

• Cercospora leaf spot: built-in genetic resistance factors allow for reduced fungicide application, preventing premature canopy senescence.
• Fusarium: inherent resistance to fungal tissue infection ensures crop viability during periods of extreme heat or excessive humidity.
• Root rots: the hybrid maintains root integrity even when exposed to soil-borne pathogens, ensuring consistent sugar yield per ton of harvested beets.

The integration of expertise from these two leading agricultural corporations has resulted in a crop that efficiently converts solar energy and soil nutrients into high-quality roots, minimizing losses from common diseases.
