The 286/96 sugar beet is the result of extensive breeding efforts by the team led by S. I. Skachkov. This hybrid is based on a diploid genetic structure, which ensures stability during propagation and high adaptability to environmental stressors. A key feature of this material is the combination of Normal-Sugar (NZ) and Normal-Yield (NE) traits, allowing farmers to achieve an optimal balance between root weight and sucrose accumulation.

Phytopathological control

One of the primary challenges in sugar beet cultivation is susceptibility to fungal infections that degrade market quality. The 286/96 hybrid demonstrates significant genetic resistance to a range of pathogens:

• Cercospora leaf spot: resistance reduces the need for frequent fungicide applications during critical growth stages.
• Seedling blight (Black leg): increased tolerance in the early stages ensures predictable plant density.
• Powdery mildew and various rot types: the breeders focused on developing a 'healthy' genotype capable of maintaining vegetative biomass until technical maturity.

Production characteristics and yield potential

The medium-sized roots exhibit a uniform shape, which simplifies mechanical harvesting and minimizes losses during the lifting process. A sugar content of 18–19% indicates high-quality raw material suitable for industrial processing. Thanks to its diploid nature, the hybrid efficiently utilizes available nutrients, converting them into biological yield without excessive energy expenditure on adaptation.
