The SS 506 sugar silage sorghum hybrid, developed by Syngenta in the USA, is a medium-maturing, high-yielding variety with plant height ranging from 3 to 4 meters. It features a strong, juicy stem and large, broad dark-green leaves, along with a small, dense panicle. This hybrid has high sugar content, ensuring high juice yield and making it especially valuable for silage production and use in the biofuel industry and animal husbandry.
The potential green matter yield ranges from 900 to 1400 centners per hectare, confirming its high productivity. SS 506 is characterized by high resistance to diseases and drought, cold tolerance during germination, and rapid regrowth after cutting. Thanks to its good branching and leafing coefficient, the forage retains juiciness and green leaf color until frost, enhancing its nutritional value and attractiveness to animals.
To obtain high-quality silage, it is recommended to intercrop with corn in a 1:1 ratio. Seeds are treated with Maxim XL and antidote for resistance to herbicides Primextra Gold and Primextra TZ Gold. The recommended seeding rate is 180–220 kg per hectare, seed packaging — 600,000 seeds per bag. The hybrid is suitable for cultivation in forest-steppe and steppe zones, expanding its application area.
