Rootstock GF 677

A robust foundation for peach orchards

GF 677 is a time-tested classic in the world of stone fruit rootstocks. Developed by breeders at the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, this rootstock has become the benchmark for those planning to establish peach orchards on soil conditions that are far from ideal. Unlike many dwarfing alternatives, GF 677 displays remarkable growth vigor, which is critical when working in depleted or calcareous soils.

Key Advantages

• Adaptability to carbonates: The primary strength of this variety is its high tolerance to high lime content in the soil, where other rootstocks often suffer from chlorosis.
• Vigorous root system: As a vigorous rootstock, it provides the tree with excellent anchorage and the ability to extract moisture from deep soil layers.
• Excellent compatibility: The variety shows stable grafting success with most peach and nectarine cultivars, ensuring the longevity of the orchard.

Important Considerations

When selecting GF 677, it is crucial to account for its vigor. Because it is a vigorous rootstock, it requires greater spacing during planting compared to dwarfing forms. It is perfectly suited for commercial orchards with intensive pruning, as the tree rapidly develops vegetative mass. A frost resistance of down to -25°C makes it a reliable choice for regions with a moderate climate, though it requires careful site selection in areas with extremely harsh winters.

This rootstock is the choice for the pragmatic grower who prioritizes tree durability and resilience to soil composition, provided they are prepared to dedicate time to canopy management.
