Clonal rootstock "Kuban'-86" (AP-1) – the result of the work of the V.I. Vavilov All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture (VNIIR) at the Crimean Experimental-Selection Station. This is a hybrid obtained by cross-pollination of apricot and peach (P. Cerasifera Ehrh×Persica vulgaris Mill). The tree is characterized by strong growth up to 4.6 m in height, a round dense crown, and thin branches that branch easily.
The bark has a maroon-green hue, and the leaves are large, wide-lanceolate, slightly shiny, and weakly wrinkled. The rootstock is distinguished by high resistance to various adverse conditions: dense, waterlogged, and calcareous soils, chlorosis, nematodes, root knot, as well as heavy soils. The roots are moderately winter-hardy (-8 … 10 °C) and have a powerful system, which ensures rapid growth of grafted varieties, early fruiting, and high productivity.
"Kuban'-86" does not produce suckers, and its drought resistance is comparable to almond. Due to compatibility with all varieties of peach, almond, apricot, most home plums, and many apricots, the rootstock is widely used in intensive orchards (600-1000 trees per hectare). In the USA, it replaced the previously widespread rootstock "Nemaguard" and is valued as a trunk-former due to resistance to wound pathogens, including cytosporosis. Recommended for the southern zone of fruit growing in Russia.
Thus, "Kuban'-86" represents a reliable, productive, and universal rootstock for stone fruits, ensuring high yield under various agronomic conditions.
