Rootstock VVA 1

Working with VVA-1 Rootstock

For orchardists dealing with stone fruits, the choice of rootstock is the foundation of long-term profitability. The VVA-1 rootstock, developed by the Vavilov Institute (VIR), has proven to be one of the most reliable solutions for plum production. It is a clonal rootstock that focuses on ease of maintenance and predictable tree growth.

Compatibility and Tree Management

The standout feature of VVA-1 is its seamless compatibility with a wide range of plum varieties. Unlike many imported rootstocks that can be temperamental, VVA-1 ensures a clean graft union without abnormal swelling, providing structural integrity for the life of the tree. The trees exhibit moderate vigor, which significantly reduces the time and labor required for pruning and makes fruit harvesting much more comfortable without the need for extreme elevation.

Resilience and Disease Control

Field performance is where VVA-1 truly shines. It offers robust natural resistance to verticillium wilt and moniliosis, the two most devastating diseases for stone fruit orchards. This resistance acts as a safety net, reducing the pressure of disease management and lowering the frequency of fungicide applications. Furthermore, the root system is highly adaptable to heavier soils where other rootstocks might struggle with oxygen starvation during wet spells.

Maintenance and Suckering

Maintenance is straightforward, as VVA-1 is known for producing very limited root suckers. When planted at the correct depth, the need to clear growth around the trunk is minimal, freeing up valuable time during the busy growing season. For an operator, this means less mechanical or manual labor in the tree row, resulting in a cleaner, more manageable orchard environment. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a balance between high yield and minimal operational overhead.
