Raspberry BIRDSKAYA

Practical insights on the 'Berdskaya' raspberry

For growers looking for a reliable, disease-resistant cultivar, the 'Berdskaya' raspberry from the Novosibirsk Zonal Station of Horticulture offers a robust solution. Developed by a team of experts including N.S. Shchapov, V.N. Sorokopudov, and A.M. Belykh, this variety focuses on ease of maintenance and effective crop management.

Field performance and maintenance

Maintenance is simplified by the variety's low thorniness, which significantly improves speed and comfort during the harvest season. From an agronomic perspective, the plant shows strong resistance to common threats like mycosphaerella leaf spot and brown spot, reducing the need for aggressive chemical intervention. It demonstrates average winter hardiness, consistent with the requirements for the region, and adapts well to standard cultivation protocols.

Harvest and processing quality

The berries are characterized by a striking black color and a uniform conical shape, averaging 2-3 grams per fruit. The flavor profile is a balanced sweet-and-sour, which intensifies during processing. This makes 'Berdskaya' an excellent choice for commercial production, specifically for jams, preserves, or dried fruit applications. With a mid-season ripening schedule, labor management remains predictable, allowing for efficient harvesting cycles.
