Engineering approach to breeding: "Poltavskyi" pepper

Developed by experts at the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, the "Poltavskyi" variety is a classic determinant pepper type focused on stable fruiting in the temperate climate of Ukraine. The breeders' main objective was to ensure a balance between early maturation and crop plasticity under varying agricultural conditions.

Technical growth parameters

The determinant growth type defines a compact bush habit. This is critical for efficient land use in both open fields and glass greenhouses: the plant self-limits its growth point, directing all metabolic resources toward fruit development rather than excessive vegetative mass. With a 75–80 day cycle, the variety shows optimal earliness, minimizing risks associated with late-summer temperature fluctuations.

Morphology and fruit quality

The conical fruit shape is not just an aesthetic standard, but a functional solution. This geometry promotes even nutrient distribution and facilitates the harvesting process. The wall thickness, ranging from 4 to 7 mm, provides sufficient density for transport without compromising marketability.

• Ripening stages: The transition from technical (green) to biological (bright red) color indicates the accumulation of pigments (lycopene), increasing the product's nutritional value.
• Fruit mass: The average range of 60–80 grams is optimal for the pre-packed retail and canning segments.
• Adaptability: The ability to grow in both open ground and glass greenhouses makes this variety a versatile tool for farms with varying levels of technical infrastructure.
