Tree peony cultivar 'Champion' (Fragrant Champion / Guan Qun Fang) — this Chinese cultivar, developed in 1971, is rightfully considered one of the best dark burgundy tree peonies. The flowers of this cultivar are large, up to 15-20 cm in diameter, semi-double or double, with a crown-like shape. They have a rich dark burgundy color with a purple hue. The outer petals are large, soft, and delicate, while the inner ones are small, curly, and more rigid. In fully opened flowers, golden stamens are visible, and the fragrance is characterized by spicy-sweet notes, making the blooming particularly attractive. The 'Champion' tree peony bushes are semi-spreading and relatively tall — their height reaches 90 to 120 cm. The stems are slender and sturdy, bearing numerous flowers. The plant grows quickly and requires ample space, as the bush spreads extensively. Due to its high cold resistance, capable of enduring temperatures down to -34 °C, this cultivar is ideal for cultivation in harsh climates and does not require winter protection. Blooming occurs in mid-to-late season, allowing for prolonged decorative effect in the garden. This perennial not only decorates the garden with its striking and fragrant blooms but also exhibits low maintenance requirements, making it accessible even for novice gardeners. 'Champion' tree peony is often used for landscaping pathways, alpine gardens, flower beds near entrances or in homes, as well as for decorating borders and gazebos.
