Peony GARDENIA

Technical Analysis of the Gardenia Itoh Peony

This cultivar is a result of advanced intersectional hybridization between herbaceous and woody peonies. From a biological perspective, the Gardenia's key advantage is its semi-woody stem structure, providing superior structural integrity. Unlike standard herbaceous varieties, this 80–90 cm tall hybrid maintains its architectural shape without the need for additional support, even under the significant weight of mature blooms.

Morphology and Flowering Dynamics

• Bloom Structure: The flower reaches a diameter of 22 cm, featuring a sophisticated double-flower architecture. The petals display a soft transition between white and pink tones, ensuring high aesthetic impact.
• Phenological Cycle: Classified as mid-season, the blooming window is strictly defined from May 31st to June 15th. This predictable cycle is crucial for professional garden planning.
• Hardiness: Developed by the FGBNU Federal Horticultural Center, the variety is engineered for extreme cold tolerance, withstanding temperatures down to -35°C, which eliminates the need for complex winter protection.

Cultivation Requirements

To maximize the decorative potential of the Gardenia, site selection based on solar radiation is critical. This variety demands full sun exposure. Adequate light is essential not only for pigment saturation but also for maintaining metabolic efficiency within the stems, which directly dictates the quality of floral bud initiation for the subsequent season. Insufficient light exposure leads to elongated internodes and diminished bud density, compromising the plant's structural balance.
